One of the main activities of the Association is the continued protection of the European roller in Serbia.
The programme started in 2003 and more than 5,000 artificial nesting boxes have been installed by 2024. In the year 2024, 759 artificial nestboxes have been checked. Of these, 509 were used by rollers. In 2024, 1312 chicks were ringed in the nestboxes. Over the years, the Association has placed out more than 5,000 nestboxes and breeding numbers are still increasing, meaning that the species has not reached the maximum number of individuals provided by the habitat. Over the years, many of the artificial nestboxes have fallen apart, others have been stolen and many are used by other bird species such as little owl, hoopoe and starlings.
The European roller conservation programme has contributed significantly to the conservation and increase of this strictly protected bird species in Serbia. In addition to raising awareness about the conservation of this and other protected species and the importance of biodiversity as a whole, we have organised workshops, lectures and conferences for protected area managers, decision-makers and the general public.
The extinction of rollers in Serbia is not only a loss for nature – it has ecological, cultural and social consequences.
Rollers are highly sensitive to changes in their environment, and their disappearance signals wider environmental problems, such as the destruction of natural landscapes, which also affects many other species. This beautiful bird species is more than just spectacular; it is a vital part of Serbia’s natural heritage. Its loss would deprive future generations of the opportunity to learn about the richness of the local wildlife.
The loss of habitat caused by increasing agricultural activity, such as ploughing up pastures, poses a significant threat to the salamander. The protection of this strictly protected species will help to protect many other species that share its habitat.
The European rollers are a magnet for birdwatchers and photographers. Their presence increases the attractiveness of protected areas and their loss reduces the opportunities for ecotourism.
